    Félix M. Goñi has been a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) from 1984. His life-long research interest has been the molecular interactions in biomembranes, with particular attention to ceramides and other sphingolipids. He received his MD from the University of Navarra in Spain and worked as a postdoctoral Fellow at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He was appointed a Lecturer and then a Full Professor at the University of the Basque Country. Professor Goñi founded (1999) and served as Head of the Biophysics Unit (currently Biofisika Institute) from 2002 to 2015. He has received numerous honours and awards, including the Luis F. Leloir Award from the Argentinian Government (2017), a honorary doctorate from the University of Bordeaux (2016), Commander of the Order of Alfonso X El Sabio (2014), Avanti-EBSALipid Award, Academician of Jakiunde (2007), Euskadi Award for Research (2002).

    Félix was part of the small group of scientists (the “hard core”) that undertook the founding of our SBE. A Society whose presidency she also held during the period from 1994 to 1998.
