Alicia Alonso is a Professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Professor Alonso studies the role of lipids in cell membrane physiology, particularly in autophagy. She is internationally recognized for her contributions to our understanding of membrane fusion using in vitro models. She is also an expert in membrane solubilization by detergents. She received a B. Sc. in Biology, then a PhD at the University of Bilbao, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Royal Free Hospital, London, under D. Chapman. Her research work has been published in prestigious journals, including Journal of Biological Chemistry, Autophagy, and Annual Review of Biophysics. The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Basque Government, among others, fund her research. Professor Alonso has been granted several awards, including the 2017 Manuel Rico – Bruker Prize of the Spanish Biophysical Society. She has recently joined the Jakiunde Academy.

Alicia was part of the small group of scientists (the “hard core”) that undertook the founding of our SBE. A Society whose presidency she also held during the period from 2006 to 2010.
